Definition of success: Have fun surfing ... NOT drain the ocean

There is a huge gap in my blog.  I last posted in 2012.  It is now 2017.  In those 5 years, I was caregiver for a family member who, I am thrilled to say, is now recovering well.  I continued to see my coaching clients and teach my fitness classes, but only now am I back to writing.  This topic pulled me back... "Success".

She said to me, "I can't believe I am still at this.  I have been working on these issues of self-care and body-appreciation for years now!  When am I going to succeed and be done with this?"  My answer is that it depends on how you define success

"The Ocean"
Most people define success as being done with the problem.  Sometimes that is true.  But not when it comes to self-care and body esteem.  Your life history, your diet trauma, the culture in which you were raised, the medical community who treated or mistreated you ... these things are part of you.  They are like the ocean in which you swim.  If you define success as "being done with this" then success would be as elusive as trying to drain the ocean.  You simply can't.

However, what happens if you accept all these experiences and parts of you?  What if success is not having no issues and being done with problems? What if you define success as building an enjoyable way to cope with issues and a system to support your self-care and body esteem?  That would be like building a nice surf board and learning to surf the waves of the ocean of your life.  Now, THAT is something at which YOU CAN SUCCEED!

Redefine success for yourself and you will enjoy life more.  You will feel better about yourself and you will enjoy your successes.

I wish you all self-care & body love.
Your LIFESTYLE matters for your health, not your weight.
